Ep04 – Multiple Intelligences in Employees: "Simplified Psychology for Business"

This is the video transcript of

.......................

Hi Everybody,

Welcome to another episode of Simplified Psychology for Business and in today's episode, we're going to be talking about Multiple Intelligences

specifically, how helps you understand your employees better.

Before all of the hype around emotional intelligence, somewhere in 1989, Howard Gardner came up with some beautiful research about how people have different, varying levels of intelligence that don't only consist of IQ, that most of our education and employment structures are based around.

Once you identify people's varying levels of intelligence you are able to put them in different departments in your organization or teams within it.

Once you identify people's varying levels of intelligence you are able to put them in different departments in your organization or teams within it.

You already see this even in industries itself, so you find people with musical intelligence go towards the arts industry, people who have linguistic intelligence are seen in foreign services or intelligence organizations.

But what's interesting is in an organization, in the right kind of environment, you can harness people's different intelligences to beat Group think because if you have one team that has a variety of intelligences at play, you're able to see things differently and more critically.

one team that has a variety of intelligences at play, you're able to see things differently and more critically.

Also, you might find that even within traditional, stereotypical departments, you'd find different intelligences.

To give you an example, just imagine an accountant that is musically inclined, you'd think traditionally accountants are very analytical and so therefore they have a higher IQ but this individual has a very high musical intelligence as well. How do you keep them engaged?

You put him in teams where he's able to work on that creativity but also use recreational or staff outings, or even sponsor a music class for him.

Another really interesting thing that we're beginning to see with organizations, especially at senior management and also with the changing nature of accountancy, in a lot of these white collar professions now, is that they expect their employees to come in with already

Myriad levels of skills and intelligences

includes and not limted to

  • ·      interpersonal skills, that is dealing with somebody else,

  • ·      intrapersonal skills holistic wellness and

  • ·      understanding your emotions -EQ

  • ·      IQ,

Three Take-away Tips

in terms of how you harness this intelligence in your organization.

1.      Put people in the right places that they feel most comfortable with.

2.      Create teams that have all of the intelligences in it so you have a variety of skills and a variety of thinking to be able to beat groupthink.

3.      And lastly, train all of your employees to reach substantial amount of level of skill, competence within all of these intelligences

to be able to make them as strategic and as objective and as successful as possible.
